I sit on a clean train that takes just over 35 minutes to get me from darkest Buckinghamshire to deepest London &#8211; well Marylebone &#8211; and another 30 minutes on the bus over to Old Street.<\/p>\n<p>I take a taxi home in the evening \u00a0&#8211; that&#8217;s \u00a37 a day, or rather, the same amount it would cost me to get the bus (after a 1 mile walk to\/from the stop) there and back&#8230; yes I know&#8230; evil&#8230;. cars.<\/p>\n<p>But here&#8217;s the thing, I can&#8217;t make the numbers work. I like to think I&#8217;m doing my bit for the environment but how can I afford it? It&#8217;s a privilege for the rich. Work with me on these numbers.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Public Transport Costs<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Weekly Train Pass: \u00a373<\/li>\n<li>Weekly cab\/buss ticket: \u00a335<\/li>\n<li>Weekly Oyster Ticket: \u00a320<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Total: \u00a3128<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Motorcycle Costs<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Weekly petrol: (50 litres per week @ 10 miles \/ litre) \u00a357<\/li>\n<li>Weekly insurance: (based on 12 months \/ 52 &#8211; fully comp most expensive quote) \u00a39.61<\/li>\n<li>Weekly tax: \u00a30.92<\/li>\n<li>Weekly servicing: (2 major services per year @ \u00a3300 each \/ 52) \u00a311.53<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Total: \u00a379.06<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I can bring down the public transport train pass price by about \u00a37 per week if I buy a monthly pass &#8211; but then I don&#8217;t save if I don&#8217;t go in (unlike the bike) so I&#8217;m trying to compare like for like &#8211; and \u00a37 per week just doesn&#8217;t cut it with these figures.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Foot deep by mattcashmore, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mattcashmore\/383527571\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left:5px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/153\/383527571_3371c97620_m.jpg?resize=240%2C180\" alt=\"Foot deep\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>So that&#8217;s it folks. Public Transport it just too expensive for me to be able to afford it. I&#8217;m going to have to jump on the bike &#8211; and these figures are hardly cheap &#8211; two full major services, top notch most expensive insurance and worst case millage figures at an estimated 10 miles more per day than google maps suggests. I suspect in real life it&#8217;ll be even less.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t mind the cold and the wet &#8211; I&#8217;ve commuted into London for years on the bike &#8211; I&#8217;m just disappointed that our public transport system is so expensive as to be out-of-reach.
