Hack Day 2008 – rather Mashed 2008

So last year the BBC and Yahoo! ran the stunningly cool Hack Day London. It was a brilliant success, and frankly I’ve been biting at the bit to organise another one. Last week I got the nod from Ashley Highfield that the budget had been cleared and we could run another one!

It’s very early days yet, but so far we know that it’s going to be late June, venue to be decided and we’re looking for other people to work with. Obviously we worked with Yahoo! last year (who’s idea Hack Day is) – and this year we want to work with as many people as possible.

I think the only major change will be that we plan to run some kind of conference on the Friday before the weekend event and that we wont be having a massive band on the Sunday night – rather we’ll be doing something (and this is soooo cool) on the Saturday night.

Oh… one last thing… we’re changing the name this year to avoid any confusion… henceforth it’ll be called Mashed.More news as the planning progresses.

From Morocco to Russia

Well not quite, but if you’ve found this site you’ll notice that it’s been a little while since it’s last update – that’s because I’m back from Morocco and now concentrating on the next challenge – Russia.

Once we’re back from Russia we’ll be turning this site into a all you need guide to getting to Morocco on a bike to partner with the all you need guide to getting to Russia on your bike… and so on 🙂

So from all three of us – if you’re planning a trip to Morocco – good luck! Please do join us on our own adventure to Russia.

Private Titus

The rather cool Richard Titus (man behind the design of the new BBC Homepage) has made the big time.

Nope I’m talking about a quote in The Times, or a mention in the cirucluars, rather he has been quoted in Private Eye.

Nick over at the BBC Internet Blog pointed it out and talked about how quotes can sound bloody stupid if taken out of context.

Birt Speak

He also points out that this actually makes sense to him, and if that makes him a Birtist then so be it (he’s been called worse). But you know what… it does make sense even out of context. We want to build a homepage, or rather the scaffholding for a new homepage, that aligns itself with the increased use of dynamic, customisable websites.

So does that make me a Birtist?

Update: James Cridland is thinking much the same thing.

Come on boys, it’s the new year, and time to play with yourself.

I’m serious. Go home tonight. Pull your draws down and get them out. Give them a good feel, really move them around in your hand and make sure they’re as they should be.

If you need a hand… Everyman has a very good guide.

Okay I know this post is a little strange, but as Journey To Russia starts to get off the ground again I’ve started looking at what we can do to get the message out about balls and checking yourself.

So go on… go to it.

Rachel Stevens may be able to help….

New interactive map

I’ve been playing with google maps again and we now have a very flash new map. It’s a bit basic at the moment but over the next few months Stace and I will be adding more detail and try to map the actual lines to our actual route as closley as possible.

We’ll also be using the map to display our photos and videos whilst we’re on the road. You’ll be able to access the map on the Route page.

British Airways – hang your heads in shame.

This is Don Hatton – an absolute gent who’s got caught up in the Dakar Rally cancellation.

He has a shed load of tickets from BA for various flights to and from Dakar – he now obviously doesn’t need most of them and all he needs to do is get home early – but from Lisbon and not Dakar.

BA have refused to help and said that his travel agent took his money not them, the customer service agent then hung up on him after telling him that he had no supervisor and that no supervisor was going to over-rule him… great stuff BA!

Top and bottom of it is that Dan is now stuck in Lisbon – if you know anyone at BA that maybe able to help – then please do give him a shout via Rally RAIDio.

Camping Espresso Review

Some people may say this is a luxury – but frankly there is nothing worse than waking up in a cold tent on a cold morning to be greeted by instant coffee or stale tea. The easy way to solve this problem? A camping espresso machine of course! Perfect for that first thing wake-me-up.

GSI actually make a good range of coffee makers – this one is the GSI Outdoors Mini Espresso kit which you can still buy from places like Amazon or Millets on the high street and is definately the closest you’re going to get to ‘real’ espresso on the road. Whilst some people may argue this is not real espresso it does meet the criteria as set out on wikipedia (so it must be true).

Caffè espresso or simply espresso is a concentrated beverage brewed by forcing hot water under pressure through finely ground coffee.

Here’s a quick video of the mini espresso machine working.
